Gilman Brothers Launches Two New Videos to Their YouTube Channel

INFINITY® and MountCor® the subjects of two new videos released by The Gilman Brothers Company

SOURCE: THE GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANY, GILMAN, CT, AUGUST, 12, 2016

The Gilman Brothers Company released two new videos to their YouTube channel this week.  The videos, featuring INFINITY® styrene-faced foamboard and MountCor® low temperature heat-activated mounting board, are part of a growing series of promotional/training videos aimed at educating the entire supply chain about the Gilman Brothers product line.  Both new videos are hosted by Bill VanHorn, Director of Sales at Gilman Brothers, and were filmed on location at The Gilman Brothers Company’s home office and Customer Experience Center in Gilman, CT.

“Gilman Brothers continues to touch the entire supply chain with improved communication and product education”, says Bill VanHorn, Director of Sales.  “Our value-added approach to customer service goes beyond anything else you’ll see in the printing industry.  Our 24/7 customer service line and our fully operational Customer Experience Center, and now these training videos, are all part of that.”

In the video featuring INFINITY® styrene-faced foamboard, Bill VanHorn demonstrates the difference in quality from other foamboards and explains, “When you have a more dense foam, it’s a more crisp cut. You don’t have the debris and the fracturing that happens with other materials.  You don’t have the tearing.”   The video also showcases INFINITY®’s color and size options as well as the unlimited possibilities for cutting and building 3D displays.

The second video features MountCor®, Gilman Brothers’ low-temperature heat-activated mounting board.  “The patent pending that we have allows the material to be used all the way down to 130°F,” explains Bill VanHorn.  “That’s massive!  Competing materials out in the marketplace can be exceeding 160-180°F.  No other product in the world could be run as fast as this can on a laminator.”   In the video, VanHorn also demonstrates the tear strength of MountCor® when mounting such materials as 10 Pt and 18 Pt paper, HP Photo Paper and Yupo Synthetic Paper.

More promotional/training videos are currently in the planning stages and will focus on other products in the Gilman Brothers line.  A video on the features and benefits of Gilman’s Eaglecell™ all-paper graphics board is expected out later this year.  These videos and others can be viewed on the Gilman Brothers website at https://gilmanbrothers.com/videos/.

The promotional/training videos were filmed and produced by VideoActive of Shelton, Connecticut.

Gilman Brothers INFINITY® Rocks the House at Vegas GlobalShop 2016

Gilman Brothers new Rock & Roll 80s booth made entirely of INFINITY® took center stage at GlobalShop 2016

The Gilman Brothers Company rocked the house at GlobalShop 2016 in Las Vegas with their new 80s Rock & Roll booth made entirely of INFINITY® styrene-faced foamboard.  The new 10’ x 20’ booth featured a life-size tour bus crashing through a graffitied back stage brick wall.  Stage rigging, amplifiers, drums, and guitars, all made entirely from their printable, cold-bendable, 100% green and recyclable INFINITY®, completed the high-energy scene.  A Slash impersonator hired by Gilman Brothers added a fun twist to the booth experience.

Team Gilman rockin’ the house at GlobalShop 2016 in Vegas

Backstage visitors at Gilman Brothers’ booth were amazed by the vivid printing quality of tour bus windshield reflection and graffitied “brick” wall, made possible by INFINITY’s super-smooth styrene surface.  The cold-bendability of INFINITY’s patent-pending foam was showcased in the form of life-sized round snare drums that looked real enough to play and “amplifiers” that seemed to boom out classic 80s hits.  INFINITY’s strength, versatility and buildability were demonstrated in the “stage rigging” and life-size tour bus, proving once again that this is no ordinary foamboard product.

“Best show in Company history! We went full throttle with our theme and the retailers loved it. Feedback was outstanding related to entire ColorOne system with the highlight being INFINITY®,” says Bill VanHorn, Director of Sales. “Commercial team will conquer and divide to meet, train and consult supply chain to take the ideas to PO’s. Industry is tired of the same options; that is where we separate from the pack.”

The 80s themed booth was designed and built by Artisan Complete of Markham, Ontario.  This is the second booth that Artisan has produced for Gilman Brothers made entirely of 100% recyclable INFINITY®.

GlobalShop is North America’s annual store design and retail marketing show, bringing together retailers, brand marketers, designers and industry suppliers each year since 1993 featuring 200,000 square feet of exhibition space.  The annual show is hosted by the Association for Retail Environments (A.R.E.)|Point of Purchase Advertising International (POPAI).

INFINITY® may be printed, shipped flat, then fabricated and fitted into a fully functional 3D booth once it arrives at the show. INFINITY offers high heat tolerances allowing for greater board flexibility to its other innovative attributes including cleanest surface, 2.5x foam density of other boards, and 3D forming allowing for print-ship-fold counter display; pole and column wraps; large floor stands; and overhead visual merchandising. Gilman Brothers also has the ability to process the foam and surface liners to match endless color configurations for an exact logo match. “Just imagine the possibilities for solid color core foamboards,” says VanHorn. “Why would you paint the white edges of any white foamboard–after cutting for overhead and merchandising signage–when it could be produced for you with the solid color throughout?”

Sign & Digital Graphics Magazine Exclusive Coverage:

Gilman Brothers Turnaround in Full Effect

Mark Pimentel, Director of Operations exclusive interview.

SOURCE: THE GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANY, GILMAN, CT, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015

The Gilman Brothers Co., a foamboard manufacturer based in Gilman, Connecticut, is in full-on expansion mode. The company is spending what it says is “several hundred thousand dollars” on improvements to its headquarters and has leased off-site warehouse space to keep up with demand.

The steps are the latest in a corporate culture turnaround that director of operations Mark Pimentel says he has brought to the company since joining it seven years ago. Gilman Brothers has redesigned its lobby, entrance and sales offices and is devoting its second floor to the build out of what it’s calling its Customer Experience Center, a new feature for the company.

In the past, Gilman Brothers’ customer service was handled by live staffers only during typical business hours, with the website serving as the off-hours and weekend destination for people seeking contact with the company. Given that it’s a global company, Gilman Bros. says it won’t make anyone wait anymore to talk live with an employee, no matter what time zone the inquiry is coming from. The CEC will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

But the Customer Experience Center will be much more than just a call center. It will be staffed around the clock with employees providing immediate answers on topics such as printing, cutting guidelines, laminating, fabrication, pricing or material recommendations. The company is also investing heavily in equipment that can be used to make prototypes for customers after hours or on the weekends, making for an extremely quick turnaround time.

The new 24/7 approach to customer service and upgrades to the building match what has been going on behind the scenes at Gilman Brothers the past few years. The company, according to Pimentel, has undergone a transformation.

Mark Pimentel,
Director of Operations

DARK DAYS IN THE PAST

“Out of 365 days, we’re probably running 320 to 330 of those days around the clock, seven days a week,” says Pimentel, who was hired seven years ago to run the company’s logistics and warehouse operations.

Pimentel says he’s comfortable talking about it now, but circumstances were anything but comfortable when he first arrived at the company. In his eyes, he says, it had a lot of problems, but instead of being scared off he welcomed the challenge to help turn it around.

“I actually was excited because I was going through a point in my life where, alright, I was used to working with companies that were organized, disciplined, and you knew what you were doing. You knew the mission, you knew where you had to go,” he recalls. “Here, I knew that I could just take what was going on in my life and turn it into a positive, and come here and make a difference. And I saw so much potential.”

Despite what he perceived as flaws in the company’s operations, he also saw that certain people were willing to roll up their sleeves and help get the company back on track, if they only had some leadership. That’s where he saw himself helping.
As one might expect, an outsider coming in and recommending sweeping changes to the way things were run caused some hard feelings early on, Pimentel says.

“It was difficult the first year,” Pimentel acknowledges. “I got into a lot of heated arguments with other managers here.”

Some of the people accepted change, others just left, he says. Three years ago, when he took over running the factory, it was much easier to begin implementing some of the best practices that he had seen in other places he had worked.

“Over time I just started hiring people to replace some of the people who were stagnant and not willing to change,” he says.

As far as he’s concerned, he says, looking back, the biggest change he made was getting everyone to work together as a team. But that required a fundamental shift that rippled throughout the company, he says.

“Everything’s transparent; there’s no silos between sales and manufacturing and accounting—we all work together,” Pimentel says. “And before… there were silos operating individually. Now it’s all open. All those walls are down and you can just feel it. You can feel the camaraderie here at the company, and it’s exciting. We have procedures in place, we have standard operating procedures, which we never had before; giving people reviews, raises—which, a lot of the guys hadn’t seen in years.”

A key moment in the future of Gilman Brothers occurred when Bill VanHorn was hired as director of sales in August of 2014. A veteran with more than 20 years of sales and marketing experience, VanHorn appreciated the new vision the company had and he delivered. In fact, Pimentel says, due to the volume of business VanHorn brought in, the company has had to lease-some additional off-site warehouse space.

Being director of operations has allowed Pimentel to revamp the way every employee is treated.

For example, the plant is shut down on Super Bowl Sunday—a big deal considering the rabid sports fans who work there, Pimentel says.

“The other big day is Mother’s Day,” he says. “They really don’t want to work Mother’s Day. They’re really not concerned about Father’s Day, which is sad, but Mother’s Day is huge.”

On Halloween, the guys who don’t have kids will adjust their schedules to fill in for those who want to go trick-or-treating with their kids, a practice encouraged by management.

“The key thing with the employees and the plant is just the positive energy,” Pimentel says. “They’re not treated like second-class citizens. We do cookouts for them, where Bill and I will flip hamburgers, we bring pizza in for them, we get ice and Gatorade for the guys. We try to do our best to communicate to them and tell them what’s going on in the field and how their work is impacting the business. Because they can see it, you know? And they take pride in what they do.”

He says he took a lesson from a former boss of his and goes around—every day, unless he’s tied up in a meeting or otherwise detained—and shakes every employees’ hand and asks them how they’re doing.

“I remember in the ’90s when I first started working, an owner of a company did that to me and it made a big impact on me,” Pimentel says. “I thought it was important that this guy that was the owner, dressed to the nines, actually went out of his way to shake my hand every morning and say hello. Even if my hand was dirty, he didn’t care. He shook my hand. And that’s what we’ve brought back to Gilman and I think it works.”
About the time that VanHorn was hired the company had just introduced two new product lines: MountCor, which is specific to the picture framing industry, and INFINITY, a 100 percent styrene board that can be used for screen printing, shipping, visual merchandising and POP displays.

Asked how much of The Gilman Brothers Co.’s resurgence has to do with those new products and how much has to do with the new management style and the new staff members he’s brought in, Pimentel says the credit should be split evenly three ways.
“Once people start to see that you do care and that you have passion, then they change, and they go from being negative to being positive, and that’s kind of where we’re at right now,” Pimentel says.

The Gilman Brothers Co. currently employs about 84 and is expected to add another dozen or so by early next year.

Gilman Brothers Launches INFINITY® in 3mm

INFINITY 3mm offers all the benefits, sizes and colors of original INFINITY, but in a new versatile, thinner version.

SOURCE: THE GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANY, GILMAN, CT, JULY 7, 2015

The Gilman Brothers Company is at it again with INFINITY®, their dynamic patent pending styrene faced foamboard which continues to change the printing industry first with the board, then easel, recyclable booth and now 3mm thickness. “Screen and digital printers already in love with INFINITY 3/16” have been clamoring for a thinner 3mm version to offer as an alternative to other plastics commonly used in the graphics industry, so it was a natural progression for Gilman to fill the void, “ says Bill VanHorn, Director of Sales, Gilman Brothers.

INFINITY 3mm offers all of the core advantages of the foam being 2.5 x more dense compared to other foams; 3D forming; ready-to-print surface for use with solvent and UV inks. INFINITY 3mm is the only green, 100% recyclable product–making it the logical choice over any non eco friendly materials such as expanded PVC. It is also 100% manufactured in the USA using 100% USA produced raw materials, the American dream.

The ultra smooth INFINITY surface eliminates pre-production cleaning and preparation which increases printing speed and efficiency when screen or digital printing, and is a featured member of Gilman Brothers ColorOne™ White Point Management System. ColorOne’s patent pending for both the paper and styrene faced foamboards centers around the white point not changing under light sources such as UV, fluorescent and incandescent, truly making the printed colors pop and accurate when exact match of logos is vital. “Working directly with some of the largest printers and end-users in our market allows us to gather critical-to-quality features of desired products so we can deliver a steady pipeline of new materials in the graphics, POP and retail signage markets,” says VanHorn.

INFINITY 3mm is available in the full range of widths, lengths and colors as other thicknesses of the INFINITY line.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Coast Art & Frame Expo Attendees Proclaim, “I Love MountCor® and MountCor® Canvas!”

The 130°F low temperature heat activated foamboards have won the hearts of users from all parts of the globe.

SOURCE: THE GILMAN BROTHERS COMPANY, GILMAN, CT, JANUARY 30, 2015

The Gilman Brothers Company has revolutionized mounting with its patent pending permanent, neutral pH adhesive, heat-activated foamboard line MountCor® and MountCor® Canvas. The exclusive MountCor Canvas adhesive formula bonds all grades, weights, finishes and fiber content of digitally printed canvases with confidence, natural and synthetic fabrics, polyester encapsulated maps and charts; Tyvek, Yupo and other synthetic papers; and all digital paper prints at the same 130°F. Its translucent, gridded release liner allows for easy document or print alignment and protects the adhesive during storage, while its air release technology ensures bubble-free mounting. The low 130°F temperature makes it safe for all formerly heat sensitive items including laser copies, plotters, inkjet, and photographic papers, while also aggressively bonding digitally printed canvases and synthetic media.

Last week’s attendees at West Coast Art & Frame Expo held at Paris Casino, Las Vegas, NV claimed over and over how much they love the new Gilman Brothers MountCor boards by singing its praises.

“I’ve worked with a variety of presses: cold & hot vacuum and mechanical. I have a cold vacuum press and a Bienfang roller press that works hot and cold. 20 years of mounting a variety of artwork, every possible way. MountCor makes my job a simple task”, says Justin, Louisville KY

“We have welcomed MountCor to our dry mount options as a lower temperature alternative for the more delicate/heat sensitive art that comes in. The rigidity of the board is by far the strongest and tends to bow less than the other boards. One of my favorite perks to MountCor is the release paper; having the protective grid not only assures me that no dust or particles creep under the art but that I can center and straighten the art quickly and efficiently”, says David, Indian Harbour Beach FL. “A pleasing side effect of the prolonged tackiness of the substrate is that you can apply the matting immediately after dry mounting with MountCor and set the project aside to ‘set up’, resulting in evenly attached mats and time saved during matting.”

ILoveMountCor

MountCor Canvas has become the industry leader for mounting all digitally printed canvases.

“We used the MountCor on laminated posters and they stuck like nobody’s business, many heat activated boards do not adhere very well to laminated posters. It worked like a dream. We love the MountCor product”, says Mike, Hudson, OH. Then he continued, “I tried mounting a thin sheet metal sign with MountCor and it totally came to the rescue. Flat as a pancake and stuck solid. The product continues to amaze me.”

“I like the fact that it comes with an individual release paper that has the nifty grid on it. I like having a clean release paper each time, it is translucent so don’t have to worry about that expensive Permalon board. The release paper also keeps each board clean”, says John, Holland, OH

The Gilman Brothers Company is proud to be offering new cutting-edge products that help the sign and framing industries to work faster and more efficiently, not harder. “There are several materials in the pipeline to expand on this and other product families. We continue to listen to what the market needs and then we execute. Our recipe for success continues to be innovation and market share expansion with new product development”, says Bill VanHorn, Director of Sales.

There are special modifiers in the styrene which has already made INFINITY the “go to” substrate for direct digital printing compatible with solvent, UV and latex inks. The foam is also 2.5x the density of other competitive foams, is recyclable, features 3D forming characteristics, and is manufactured in the USA using 100% USA produced raw materials.

The INFINITY Easel may be printed, scored and shipped flat–as seen in the photo–then hand bent and converted into a simple 3D self-supporting easel presentation in less than a minute. The resulting sign is an eye catching 3D graphic display for table or countertop, large floor stand, or left flat for visual merchandising overhead displays. “We are excited with the response from not only printers but also advertising agencies and end-users in various retail and POP markets. Our distribution partners are with us long-term as we continue to channel our go to market strategy”, says VanHorn.

Sign & Digital Graphics Magazine

Web Exclusive: Gilman Brothers Reinvents Itself

The Gilman Brothers Co., which was launched in 1897 by the grandfather of the company’s current president, is riding the wave of the largest product launch in company history while at the same time revamping the way it does business both internally and externally.

The Gilman, Connecticut-based foamboard manufacturer this month launches its new “INFINITY” product line, aimed at any environment where graphic signage is in use, including airports, grocery and convenience stores and restaurants.

“INFINITY is the largest product launch in the company’s history,” says Bill VanHorn, Gilman Brothers’ director of sales, adding that it’s part of the company’s new, trademarked ColorOne White Point Management System.

INFINITY is one of two major product rollouts for Gilman Brothers in the past year, the other being the MountCor line. Several years in development, MountCor is specific to the picture framing industry and improves productivity, speed and flexibility for users, VanHorn says.

In the case of Gilman’s INFINITY products, which the company spent three years developing, VanHorn says it has several advantages: It offers the same white point whether the board is laminated with paper or styrene; it’s twice as dense as competing foams; it has the smoothest, most consistent texture; and it’s the most flexible, VanHorn says, adding that it can be shipped flat but can be cold-bent on-site to create a 3D display.

Along with the product launches has been some shuffling behind the scenes at Gilman Brothers, including the hiring of VanHorn in early August. He comes to the company from Regal Graphics, where he was a distributor for Gilman Brothers products. Before that VanHorn was with General Electric’s plastics division, which later was bought out and became Sabic.

“I was a customer of Gilman and there were a lot of things I wish I had when I was out there selling on behalf of Gilman,” VanHorn says, adding that since he’s come on board, several of those wishes are being granted, including revamping the website and upgrading all its sales materials; reassessing its current distribution channels and, in some parts of the country, replacing its manufacturer reps so the in-house sales team can maintain closer relationships with customers; and adding online tutorials for its clients and potential customers. The company is in the process of establishing its own YouTube video channel it will populate with those educational videos, VanHorn says.

In the press release announcing his hiring and the other changes Gilman Brothers is going through, VanHorn declares his plans to more than double the company’s sales in less than four years – not the kind of bold prediction typically found in a press release.

“The reason why that was put in there is there really hasn’t been a strong voice for the Gilman company in recent years, so it was a statement intended to tell the market what we’re going to do and how big we’re going to grow,” he says.

Other staff changes include Mark Pimentel being promoted to director of operations; Cyrus Gilman being named vice president of business development; and Ari Luna promoted to inside sales representative.

Phil Gray, who’s been with Gilman Brothers more than two decades, has moved with his family to Florida where he’ll take over the company’s southeast sales territory until he decides to retire, VanHorn says. He adds that he and others will continue to tap into the font of knowledge Gray has accumulated over the years.

Evan Gilman, president of The Gilman Brothers Co., says in a statement that the changes the company has made are an investment into its continued long-term success.

“The staff in place is the strongest in company history and we are now poised for explosive growth,” writes Gilman, grandson of company founder Nathan Gilman.

Nathan Gilman first launched Gilman Brothers in 1897 as a bedding company, and its decades-long relationship with the city it is in began when he bought out the Bozrahville (now Gilman) Manufacturing Co. and moved all his operations there. After having to rebuild after a fire completely destroyed the factory, Nathan’s three sons took up the company business, later converting it into a flocking company.

Having survived the country’s deep recession in the early 1980s, Gilman Brothers turned into the foamboard manufacturer it is today. One of Nathan’s sons, Charles, is 93 and still sits on the board of directors, VanHorn says.

VanHorn says the latest transformation of the company is simply continuing what it’s been doing throughout its history: taking advantage of new technologies and new materials as they come along. And he adds that he is energized about its future.

“There are various companies on our radar, and as our sales increase we will have companies in our crosshairs that we’re going to approach,” VanHorn says.
